Instruments

Item Specification
Types All fretted string instruments with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 strings or string pairs.
String Pairs The display and sounds of dual-string instruments, such as the mandolin and 12-string guitar are fully supported.
Short String The special case of the short string on the 5-string banjo is fully supported.
Standard Instruments There are 116 standard tunings defined for 19 different standard instruments.  Each of these instrument may also have a custom tuning defined.  Other custom instrument types are also available.

Fretboard

Item Specification
Length Up to 19 frets. Standard libraries use 14 fret length for optimum display.
Capo Use of a simulated capo is fully supported.
Orientation Every one of the 8 possible orientations is supported.
Overlay Labels Overlay labels on the fretboard can be optionally color-coded so that all occurrences of the same note on the fretboard appear in the same color.  The chord or scale represented by the overlay labels is indicated with a heading label next to the fretboard.
Fret Markers Single, double or none, on the edge or face of the fretboard, for any or all frets up to the 19th fret.

Libraries

Item Specification
Filenames Use file extension .cwl (for ChordWizard Library).
Maximum Size Up to 1 million chordshapes per library.
Standard Libraries Standard libraries are supplied for guitar, bass guitar, 5-string banjo, 4-string banjo, mandolin and ukulele for each available playing level.  New libraries can be quickly created and populated for any instrument or tuning.
Switch Library The Switch Library box offers an easy way to quickly change between libraries for different instruments or playing levels, or create new libraries as desired.
Integrated Library Settings Since a library is fundamentally based on a particular instrument and playing level, several settings are integrated into the libraries themselves, including the voice used for the instrument, the chord and scale types used for the library, the sorting and grouping options used to index chordshapes within the library, and the searching options used for finding new chordshapes.
Library Auto-Population It is easy to create a new library for any stringed instrument in any tuning, due to the step-by-step process for creating new libraries, including a fully automatic library population procedure, which scans the entire fretboard for all possible chordshapes, and selects the best choices according to the criteria you provide.

Music Theory Engine

Item Specification
Playing Level Operates at Beginner level.
Chord Types 7 chord types are supplied.  These can be activated, deactivated and adjusted.
Scale Types 7 scale types are supplied.  These can be activated, deactivated and adjusted.
Matching Chords Up to 7 matching chords can be calculated for each chordshape.  The exactness and number of matching chords may be controlled independently.

Workspace Views

Item Specification
Multiview Layout The main screen contains five views - Library, Design, Relations, Scales and Tutorials - each with its own focus and layout.  Locating and switching between views is made easy via a row of tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Library View The primary function of Library View is finding chordshapes within the current library and this is made easy by the chord matrix, which allows rapid filtering by chord using a single mouse click.  The matrix shows the counts of all chordshapes by their chord, making it easy to keep track of a library's contents with a single glance.  All other filtering options are still available from the Filter Bar or the Set Filter box.
Design View Design View includes a toolbar to provide better access to common design functions, such as adding and deleting chordshapes, searching for new chordshapes, and setting and removing filters.
Relations View As well as the Relations box, there is also a Relations View in the workspace which shows how selected chords and scales are related to each other.
Scales View Scales View displays, for all instruments and tunings, how scales operate on the fretboard.  All viable scale positions are identified and the best of these are presented according to the preferences of the user.
Tutorials View Tutorials View presents a set of music theory tutorials, containing several hotspots which play demonstration sounds to reinforce the concepts being explained.

Library Operations

Item Specification
Filtering Flexible filtering options are available, including the ability to filter library chordshapes directly by a particular scale.  There is also a filter component which permits filtering not only by a matching chord, but by the bass note of its inversion as well.  This provides a foundation for slash chord notation, which is supported throughout the ChordWizard workspace.
Purge Chordshapes A Purge Chordshapes function is available in Library View, which allows very rapid customisation of libraries by trimming off chordshapes which fail to meet your specified criteria. The filter, matching chords, searching settings, or fret positions may be used as the criteria for purging.
Chordshape Searching When finding new chordshapes, the Search List box is able to add a multiple selection of new chordshapes at the same time.  There is also a warning box which lets you know if your new chordshape design fails to satisfy either the filter or the searching options that you specify.  You may prevent chordshapes which already exist in the library from being displayed as search results.
Power Match For unknown chordshapes there is a Power Match process which can identify with authority any chordshape that is entered.  First it checks through all known chord types, in case the most appropriate chord type exists, but is currently disabled.  Then it constructs credible new chord types to fit the notes of the new chordshape. Accepting the results of this process updates the chord type definitions throughout the workspace, providing a mechanism by which ChordWizard grows with you.
Relations Modes Relations View can operate in one of three modes.  In Chords and Scales mode, the selected chord and scale interact with each other and with the fretboard.  In Chords and Fretboard mode, the scale matrix is disabled, and finger blocks may be placed on the fretboard to interact with the chord matrix.  In Scales and Fretboard mode, the chord matrix is disabled and finger blocks may be placed on the fretboard to interact with the scale matrix.  This provides a very clear and easy way to identify the scale from the fragment of a melody as played on the fretboard.
Scale Practice Scales View can conduct flexible scale practice cycles, where different scales and positions, and patterns can be played in repeating steps, to provide continuous structured training.  An optional metronome or harmony chord can also be selected to promote good timing and the understanding of chord structure within the context of different scales.

Workspace Tools

Item Specification
Musical Tools The Notes To Chords tool lets you explore the relationships between chords and individual notes.  The Notes To Scales tool reveals the scale(s) most closely related to a melody.  The Chords To Scales tools reveals the scale(s) most closely related to a chord sequence.
Staff View Tool Any chordshape, chord or scale can be displayed on staff lines.  Simply right click over an item in the main screen and select Staff View.
Tuner Tool The Tuner tool allows pitch perfect tuning of the user's instrument using the computer's sound output as a reference.
Metronome Tool The Metronome tool has a range of sound and configuration options which can be used for timing practice in any situation.
Synonym Chords and Scales There are tools for exploring the special cases of synonym chords and scales, those which contain the same notes as other chords and scales, but in a different inversion.
Transpose Chords The Transpose Chords tool allows you to enter a series of chords and see which chords they become when transposed to another key.

Printing Reports

Item Specification
Color Reports, Many Options The printing facilities in ChordWizard are very sophisticated.  All report types have a wide range of choices over layout and placement of report elements, and all reports may be printed in full color.  Arbitrary multiple selections of chords and scales are possible for all reports, providing a high level of control over their content.
Report Table of Contents An automatic table of contents and title page may be generated for any of the report types, in either column or matrix format.  This is a particularly powerful feature for custom Chord Book reports, which can be very rapidly produced in their entirety, in press-ready format.
Scale Chart Reports Scale Chart reports are available with three formats to choose from.  In addition to note labels across the entire fretboard, full and partial position playing with color coded labels is supported to complement the screen display.
Relations Reports The Relations report type can display the related chords of a scale or vice versa, making it easy to take this information away from the computer.  For example, when writing a song in a particular scale, you can keep a hard copy of the related chords that you might use.
Report Templates To help manage report types and settings, there is also the facility to prepare and store report templates, containing a set of preferred options, for instant recall.  This permits the convenient standardisation of reports for lessons or practise sheets.
